A 5 Layer Cake for a 5 year old sweetie!

I mentioned on my Facebook page a few weeks ago that I was making a five layer cake for my turning-five-year-old daughter. I have to say, I am a girl that rarely has projects like these turn out like I want them. I am a good cook, but don’t do so well in the “pretty food” department. But this one came out better than I thought! And it was fun and tasty, too, which is always a bonus!

Birthday girl got to help. She may or may not have sampled the green batter. I just made 5 really shallow 9 inch cakes that I dyed different colors. One of the layers was red velvet, the others vanilla.
Here are four of the layers together. The colors, from the outside, looked really dull, so I was a little disappointed at first. {Although I was more than a little excited the whole thing didn’t topple over!}
Instead of covering the whole cake with fondant (which I don’t think tastes great) like the original that  I saw on Pinterest (of course!), we cut out shapes from fondant and I let the birthday girl decorate them with gel icing.
Here’s the cake covered in cream cheese icing I made. I think it’s my fave! Cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar- what’s not to like?
After we finished decorating- looking cute! I got her name candles at Party City.
 I think she likes it!
All lit up!
And finally, we cut it! The colors were definitely vibrant on the inside- matching my little girl’s personality!
Mmmm wish I had a piece left over! 😉
What project have you had that turned out great? Either way, it’s fun to try new things!
