Book It: Priscilla Shirer’s God Is Able Book Review

A few months ago, I was contacted by an agent to see if I wanted to review both Priscilla Shirer and Beth Moore’s new books. Um, yes, I do! Both are favorites of mine and I am always in the market for new reading material. (I reviewed another of Beth’s books two years ago; yes, we’re on a first-name basis!)

I read Priscilla’s new book, God is Able, in about three sittings. It’s that good. It’s such a simple concept- our God can do a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. but one that I tend to forget when things aren’t going as I think they should. The whole book is based by unpacking the goodness in Ephesianss 3:20, 21:

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

I’ve see miracles in many forms- yet it’s so easy to focus on what isn’t being fixed on my timetable. One thing I love about this book is that Priscilla not only gives example after example of God healing hearts, marriages, physical bodies, etc., but she gives practical steps of how to turn our hearts toward Christ instead of focusing on our worries. (And worrying is so easy to do!) Worship. Meditation. Memorizing scripture. Practicing these disciplines instead of fretting (p. 46).

I also love that she speaks about not being jealous of other people’s miracles. Let’s face it, when one of our peers gets the promotion, the marriage, the book deal that we wanted, it’s easy to become fearful that they took a bigger portion of God’s blessing. But his blessing and power can’t be used up! There’s always plenty to go around- (p. 120).
