Book Review: I Will Carry You

What the Lord has given us can either be taken into ourselves as pain or given back to Him as a holy offering, one that glorifies His name and gives meaning to our loss.” ~Angie Smith

I recently found Angie Smith’s book I Will Carry You at Half Price Books. I have looked every single time I have entered its doors for the past year or so, and was so happy to finally find it!

So, you may ask, what is so special about this book to me?

Angie’s blog was the very first one I ever started reading, almost four years ago. At the time she had already delivered her fourth daughter Audrey, whom went to be with the Lord shortly after her birth.
I spent hours upon hours on this blog, in awe  of Angie’s incredible faith through what most of us would consider the worst possible trial: losing a child.

I read this book in about two days. One night, (thanks to some green tea at bedtime) I stayed up until 4:30 a.m. reading this book. It’s that good.

Overall, it is the story of Audrey’s diagnosis and Angie’s pregnancy. She writes as if she is pouring her heart out to you over coffee. Angie tells stories of taking Audrey on every possible adventure while still in her womb, because that was most likely the only time they had together. They took her to playground, the grocery store, and at their other daughters’ request, even Disney World. I found myself cheering for Audrey to be healed, although I already knew the outcome. (And really, didn’t she get the Ultimate Healing?)

This book is beautifully written and had me crying several times. (Well, actually most of the time.) Angie gives hope to anyone enduring any trial- that God will be with us no matter what terrible heartache we are enduring. Her wholehearted, reckless love for the few months she had Audrey before birth, and the few hours after, serve a poignant reminder that any life matters, no matter their size or amount of time on earth.

She says, “Part of trying to cultivate a grateful heart is looking for opportunities to share the gospel through my loss and seeking ways to bring God glory through the loss.” What a powerful testament that even though she has walked through a fiery trial, she still seeks to glorify God. It is a beautiful story that will take you only days to read, but will stay in your heart for a very long time.
