Gettin’ Crafty: Handprint Turkey Plaque {Thanksgiving Craft}

I love Thanksgiving. It’s right up there with Christmas for me. I love the beginning of the Holiday season, the weather, the food, getting together with our (big) families, watching the younger kids play football, and of course, being thankful for that which God has blessed us. What’s not to like?

I’ve done a bit more fall decorating the last few years than in the past, and my kids love making crafts, so I thought- why not have them make a Thanksgiving craft? Since my kids are home schooled four out of five days of the week, most holiday crafts are up to me if I want to have them. And since it’s up to me, I wanted to make something a little more durable than a construction paper pilgrim hat.

I had a few of these oval wooden plaques lying around, and a 6-year-old daughter that would rather do crafts than breathe, so we whipped up this little plaque up this afternoon. Here’s how you can do it, too:

Start by painting a wooden plaque in whatever color you like. We chose a gold color with just a bit of sheen.

After your base layer of paint dries, paint your child’s palm one color of paint, then each finger a color. You could do all one color or 5 different colors- it’s yours! Work quickly though- acrylic paint dries fairly quickly.

Here’s what it should look like:

Then your child can embellish with a sharpie with his or her name, plus feet and a gobbler for the turkey.

Then enjoy your child’s craft that won’t get smushed at the bottom of the fall decoration box with the paper Pilgrim’s hat!
