My First trip to the ER

In my family, my siblings and I have this joke of referring to first time events in our lives as “Baby’s First…. fill in the blank.” For example, my sister texted me the other day and said, “Baby’s first homemade pizza,” referring to the fact that she’d just made her first one!

Well, I can put it in my baby book now that I’ve had “Baby’s first ER visit” at age 35. I am mostly fine now, but Saturday night was not a good one. I have PCOS and was having severe symptoms due to this lovely syndrome. I called my doctor’s office and spoke with the nurse and she told me I needed to go to the ER. This was about 8 p.m. Being the good patient that I am, I began texting two good friends that are doctors and getting their opinions. Finally, 3 hours later, with another friend at home with our sleeping babies, Ben and I headed out. The symptoms were getting worse if anything and my blood pressure was all over the place.hospital bracelet

We were in and out in 3 hours- crazy good efficiency at the hospital we chose- after having blood work done to check my hemoglobin level (it was fine) and doing an ultrasound to be sure nothing else was going on. (There wasn’t. It was my first ultrasound that didn’t involve seeing a little baby on the screen and it was pretty sad, actually.) We then had to find a 24-hour pharmacy to pick up my meds.

I spent most of yesterday resting. Ben took the kids to church then some friends brought over lunch. (Did I mention we have really good friends? So many friends involved in this whole picture.) I’m supposed to follow up with my doctor early this week but things seem to be on the upswing.

Our church– and the focus of our ministry- is in the world’s largest medical center and I’m so thankful to be close to such excellent medical care.
