The Best Road trip Ever

A few months ago, I was talking on the phone with one of my roommates from college, Erin. (Talking on the phone, I know. We’re so 90s!) She mentioned that we should take a roadtrip together this summer. I quickly agreed, thinking it was a great idea, but highly doubting that all the pieces would fall into place. We have 6 kids between us so I thought something would inevitably come up- and something did come up causing us to change our dates- but we did it! For the first time in about 14 years, the two of us loaded up in a car- alone- and hit the road.

What made the trip really fun was that we had ZERO plans of where we were going. I met her at her house (we’re fortunate that after years of living hours apart, we only live about 40 minutes from one another now) and we whipped out a map and decided where we would go. We decided on Salado, TX, mostly because my only requirement was that we were near water so I could swim (my favorite) without having children around. Because we all know that swimming with children and without is about the difference of daylight and dark- both good, but very, very different. 😉

I called on the way and booked a bed and breakfast for the 2 nights. This was the view from the main house of the inn:

Um, yes, please! We actually stayed in a little annex around the corner- and we were delighted to find it was called the “College Quarters”- perfect for us!

One of the most important ingredients of a successful roadtrip is the snacks. Just last week I was in Randall’s checking out the items they have featured for their “Best Road Trip Ever” event going on right now. I wish I’d picked up some of these items before our trip- Dove’s chocolate-covered blueberries became one of my favorite snacks at the first bite! My kids love them, too.

I also thought these other snacks would be great on a roadtrip:

The new Gevalia Iced Coffee in the Mocha flavor because, of course, coffee!

Quaker Chewy  Chocolate Chip Granola Bars (I’m sensing a chocolate theme here 😉 )

and something salty to balance out all that sweet- Wheat Thins. For some reason, snack crackers remind me of my grandma and I love that!

And because I ALWAYS forget to pack something important, I decided to create a printable packlist to share with you guys and share the steps I take in packing.

1.) Think about where you might go. I knew we wanted to be close to the water, so I was sure to pack a swimsuit and flipflops.

2.) Make a packing list so you’re sure to not forget anything important, like cash. My friend and I split lots of expenses, so having cash made it much easier!

3.) Be sure to pack plenty of snacks. It makes hours in the car so much more fun!

4.) Don’t over-pack. While you want to be prepared, you don’t want to be lugging around a massive bag everywhere.

5.) Be sure to bring your flexible attitude! Road trips often have little bumps in the road (pun intended 😉 ) and it doesn’t do any good to get upset about it. Enjoy the ride!
