Unicorn Grilled Cheese Sandwich

I’m so excited to welcome my friend Bon from MathFour.com as a guest today for my “Grilled Cheese Extravaganza” series. When I asked for guest posters, she immediately responded that she’d been wanting to do a Unicorn Grilled Cheese Sandwich for her daughter. I was excited to having something so original in the series!

(Check out the Rosemary Provolone Grilled Cheese and Basil Mozzarella Flatbread from earlier in the series!)

If you’ve got a little girl, she’s sure to love these! Here’s Bon’s great idea:

If you’re a mom, you’ve likely heard, “Mom, can I have a Mickey Mouse pancake?”

No problem, right? Mickey is clearly three circles. Easy-sneezy for pancake creations.

But when your daughter says, “Mom, can I have a unicorn grilled cheese sandwich?” what do you do?

You have, you realize, inadvertently given yourself the title of Maker of Any Food Product As the Likeness of Any Animated Creature.

So you certainly don’t want to disappoint. If you can help it.

Enter, Unicorn Grilled Cheese Sandwich, stage left.
The ingredients are simple:
1 Grilled Cheese Sandwich – square (or square-ish)
1 Ultra sharp, ultra small knife
1 Confident mom (or dad)
It make take a few tries, but don’t worry. Their imaginations are far better than ours. They’ll totally see a unicorn on the first try. Here’s the template:

And there’s math in it…
Of course it’s nice to be able to be a little educational with it too.
Try asking:
  • How many shapes did I cut out?
  • How many sides does each shape have?
  • What are the names of the shapes that I cut out?
But don’t get too crazy with the math. Just saying there is math in it is sometimes good enough!
Thank you Bon! This is so fun, and I’ve got two little girls around here that would certainly appreciate a Unicorn Grilled Cheese!

  1. Wow!! That’s pretty awesome 🙂

Thankfully my little guy is still asking for Mickey Mouse, not too sure how successful I would be at anything else lol.

  2. Good job! I would never have thought to have known how to do this.

  3. I can’t wait until my little one is old enough for me to cut his sandwiches into fun shapes!

  4. My 4 year old loves grilled cheese and she would love this. Thanks for sharing! Definitely can’t wait to try!
