Dollar Tree Trip!

I was lucky enough to make a trip to a very nice Dollar Tree this weekend. If you’ve been in several, you know what I mean by that! Some are bright, clean, and well-stocked while others are dark, dirty and have less-than-stellar products.

I wanted to do an overview this week instead of a product-by-product review- just so you could see the price comparison of some items. Most of the price comparisons are from Wal-Mart. They seem to be the next-cheapest on most things, and I can find the prices on WalMart.com. I’ll do reviews of some of these products as I use them.

I spent $19.91 and here is what I got:
*2 loaves of bread {this particular store has had Nature’s Own whole wheat before- which usually runs around $2.79 a loaf at other stores. Today, though, they only had Mrs. Baird’s Split Top wheat- which is technically not whole wheat, but still a good deal.}
* 2 tubes of Colgate MaxFresh {$3.16 each at Wal-Mart}
* 1 tablet of construction paper {$2.79 online at Wal-Mart}
* 2 jars of olives {around $2.50 each at Wal-mart}
* 1 jar pickles {no idea, but I’m guessing at least $2 at WM}
* 1 bottle detergent for delicates 42 oz. {50 oz @ WM is 7.97- even with a coupon this is a huge difference!}
*2 4-pack applesauce {a 6 pack at WM is 1.33 so that is a better deal by a smidge}
* one small (10x10ish) closet organizer box {around $5 at WM}
*The Works toilet cleaner {probably around the same price as WM}
* laundry bag that hangs on the door – I am very excited to try this out- it will get the laundry basket off of my very-crowded closet floor
*one metal over-the-door hook {cheapest one on WM.com is $5.47! They may be cheaper in the store, though}
*one package(of 5) dust masks {$6.09/pkg of 5}
* 2 pairs of dress socks for hubby {3 pr/ 9.50 at WM- s0 3.16 a pair}
Remember, my total was $19.91.
If I had the same amount to spend at Wal-Mart, I could have only bought the first 4 items on the list!
If I had bought all of these items at Wal-Mart with the prices listed online, {and this is not even counting the items I couldn’t find prices for! – toilet cleaner, laundry bag, pickles}- the total would have been a whopping- wait for it- $51.86 plus tax!
So, even there is a lot of “junk” at Dollar Tree- there are definitely items that can save you tons of cash!

  1. Wow! Good for you! I have the great misfortune having to shop in a small town where NONE of the stores are clean, bright, or well-stocked. I usually shop our local health-food store (I buy what’s on sale or what they have coupons for) and our local produce stands! Since I don’t have kids I don’t have to worry about diapers and school supplies…I’ll have to learn to brave the dark and dirty grocery stores one day!

  2. Thanks for the update…. I went and get 27 things…
    let see:
    Spongebob square pants sandwich bags
    Eye shadow – one that has like 16 shadows in it
    air freshener
    a john wayne dvd
    sun block
    3 pack of travel tooth brushes with travel case
    and a bunch of other goodies…
