chasing God: book review and 4-book giveaway!

One of my very favorite authors (and the very first blogger I read!) is Angie Smith. I was able to hear her speak last year at a women’s conference and she is just as real and honest in person as she is in her writing. I was recently able to read her latest book, Chasing God. I’ve also read Mended: Pieces of a Life Made Whole and I Will Carry You (I highly recommend this one and I give it to grieving mothers that I know- it’s so good. You can read my review here.)

Anyway, Chasing God took me a minute to get used to because it’s written just as if Angie is sitting at the table chatting with you over coffee. By the end of the book, I was loving it as much as any of her others! The basic premise of the book is that as Christians, we say we’re trying to follow God, when really sometimes what we’re doing is trying to catch up to him. This makes for a tiring existence, am I right?

I love Angie’s chapter on the holiness of God. Ahhh it’s not something I often just sit and think about it. But he.is.holy. Angie brought to my attention that it’s the only attribute of God that is repeated three times (as in “holy, holy, holy” in Isaiah 6) and that repetition is a key to listen up- because it’s important! On page 63, she says that “God’s holiness is emphasized above His other characteristics , such as ‘loving’ or ‘just.'” Wow.

I am also a fan Angie’s tales from her early days as a Christian. In her chapter on prayer, she tells a side-splitting story of gathering to pray with some college girlfriends and the turmoil that preceded the actual prayer time- she was so nervous! But then she succinctly sums up, “He doesn’t rely on our prayers to keep things running. But He wants them, because they are an indication of our heart for Him.” I love how she is able to seamlessly segue from a hilarious story to a punch-in-the-gut truth.

As usual, Angie’s book didn’t disappoint. If you’re tired of chasing after God- but of course never able to catch Him- this book is for you! You can buy it here on Amazon or see if’ it’s at your library!

  2. Karilyn Putt says

I just finished love finds you in glacier bay, Alaska. Awesome book!!!
Thank you for this opportunity! I live in Alaska.

  3. I’m interested to read it!

  4. My favorite is Calm My Anxious Heart by Linda Dillow. She’s my favorite author 🙂

  5. The Bible! 🙂 Everyone says that. I couldn’t resist. It isn’t new, but my all time study/book is Joanna Weaver’s Lazarus Awakening.

  6. “Chasing God” sounds awesome!! I have to admit that my favorite book is an oldie but goody. “The Grace Awakening” did more for my relationship with God then any book other than the Bible. It was a life changer!!! I also love a book I am reading right now called, “Disciplines of a Godly Woman” by Barbara Hughes. It has been an eye opener and reveals so much of what God wants for us as women, whether it be the disciplines of out character, our soul, our relationships or our ministries. I love it!!!

  7. All 4 books sound great! Right now, I could use a parenting handbook 🙂

  8. Oops! I’m currently reading Feminine Appeal by Carol Mahaney and it is excellent so far!

  9. I would love to read these books!

  10. I loved Angie Smith’s What Women Fear, but I haven’t had a chance to read Chasing God yet. I’d love to! I’ve never heard of the Christian Parenting Handbook, and would be interested in that one, too! I’d have a really hard time pinpointing a favorite book! For fiction, I love Ted Dekker’s Circle Series. For nonfiction….I’m currently reading Forgotten God by Francis Chan and The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace.

  11. I would love to read Whispers of Hope.

  12. I’m a sucker for a good book, especially one that will help me be a better wife and mother. I think it’s hard for us to focus on our own relationship with God sometimes because we’re so focused on our kids’ relationship with God, or our husband’s.

  13. One of my all time favorite books is “Whats so Amazing About Grace” By Phillip Yancy! In fact, I think I’ll start it again! Its been a while! 🙂

  14. Those look so good! I would have to say my favorite book right now is the key to your childs heart by Gary Smalley.

  15. Proverbs 31 Wife has really stuck with me since I read it last year. But I assume you have already it. 🙂 I just recently picked up “The Four Seasons of Marriage” by Gary Chapman. My husband and I plan to read it together, but in all realness I will probably take three weeks to read it and he will finish it in one day. We are completely different readers.

  16. emotionally healthy spirituality is my fav right now

  17. Why not add another book to the queue of books I would LOVE to read…lol. Thanks for sharing your heart, Kelli! <3

  18. Teresa Moore says

A Confident Heart by Rene Swope is what I am trying to read now. Time is my issue at the moment.

  19. 2 books that I recommend time and time again are: Mad Church Disease and Permission to Speak Freely by Anne Jackson…highly recommend them both!!
